Natural Way of Getting Rid of Dust Mites

Did you know that your mattress is home to dust mites that can number anywhere between 100,000 to 10 million? In the United States, about 10% of the population are allergic to them. These microscopic insects are everywhere in your home - furniture, carpets, beddings, bookcases, stuffed animals, drapes. If you belong to the unfortunate 10%, then it becomes doubly important to control their spread. Here are natural ways to get rid of dust mites:

  1. Clean your house every week. Dust everywhere using a microfiber cloth or damp cloth. Dust mites need humidity to live, so make sure to keep the moisture down.
  2. Change and wash your bedding once a week in high temperatures, at least 130F. Dust mites can survive in any kind of climate, although they thrive in temperatures over 70F and humidity levels above 50%.
  3. If you allergy to dust mites is extreme, you should dispose of all carpeting. Instead, use hard flooring. But if you really have to use carpet, have it steam cleaned on a regular basis, once a year at the very least.
  4. When cleaning hard surfaces, a feather duster and a broom are useless as they will just push the dust mites around.
  5. Plush toys are a haven for dust mites. If you have them in the house, wash them in hot water regularly or put them in the freezer for at least a day to kill dust mites.
  6. Purchase a vacuum cleaner with HEPA (high efficiency particulate arresting) filter bags or filtering system. Using a vacuum cleaner without the HEPA filter bag does not solve the problem. Like using a feather duster or broom, dust mites are just moved around instead of killed if you do this.
  7. Make sure that your heater and air conditioning filters can trap allergens. Run you air conditioner during hot months of summer to reduce dust mites by as much as 50%.

Dust mites are extremely fertile. A female mite can lay from 40-100 eggs. If you do not want to your home to be overrun by dust mites, then start cleaning now.
